Spartani bellô Messeniacô I. per annos viginti occupati, (Ephorus apud Strabonem l. 6. annô belli 10 id factum ait, sub Polydoro Rege) metu ne interim Sparta tota viris nudaretur, maxime iuvenes ex castris remisêre in urbem eosque passim cum virginibus congredi iusserunt, ex quibus postea nati, incertô patre, dicti sunt Partheniae, quasi filii Virginum. Hi cum postea a reversis Spartanis sese pro spuriis ac nothis haberi viderent, nec ad ullam Rei publ. partem admitti; scirent tamen se Spartanô sanguine editos, coniurârunt dolore contemptus cum Helotis, de Optimatibus trucidandis. Quô consiliô patefacto, duce Phalantô, alio migrare sunt coacti. Hinc ergodelati in magnam Graeciam Tarentum condidêre, quod vide.
